Start with what you wear most

The best wardrobe is built from the pieces you reach for without thinking. Look at what you wore last week before you think about what to buy next.

Choose the fabric first

Linen breathes, cotton is easy, wool keeps its shape. A good fabric in a simple cut outlasts any trend.

• Pick two or three colours that go together.
• Keep one layer for the morning chill.
• Let one piece do the talking.

Wear it again

Clothes look better worn. A shirt that has softened over a summer is worth more than a new one.

Buy less, choose well, wear it often.
